INDUSTRY UPDATES
PPG’s 2023 Color of the Year Expected to Influence Industrial Design
PPG announced that its 2023 color of the year, Vining Ivy, is expected to shape the styling direction of industrial and consumer products, including cookware, consumer electronics, and office furniture. PPG also announced a collection of three coordinating color palettes called Reflection.
Vining Ivy reflects the continued global dominance of green around the world. It is the second consecutive year that PPG selected a shade of green and the third in the past five years. PPG’s color stylists believe that the dominance of the hue is reflective of the continued interest in biophilic design, which is a trend that incorporates nature into everyday lives and spaces. “Green has a calming yet modern aesthetic and symbolizes prosperity, freshness, and progress," said Vanessa Peterson, PPG global color styling leader, industrial coatings. “It perfectly reflects our current climate.”
During its annual color forecasting workshop, PPG color stylists arrived at Vining Ivy after a comprehensive review of top trends from industries that include automotive, electronics, architectural building applications, and fashion across 10 global regions.
PPG’s global team of color stylists also have curated a palette of 45 coordinating hues for a reflection-themed color collection, which is inspired by the shared – and growing – appreciation for minimalism, quiet design, biophilia, and solace. The compilation is organized into three unique color stories: Serenity, Origin, and Duality.
A gentle palette of milky pastels, watery tones, and warm neutrals, Serenity reflects the desire for calm and solitude in a chaotic world, and inspires a sense of renewal and peace. By capturing the authentic beauty of nature, Origin cultivates a sense of wonder with a bio-palette curated with organic hues. Lending itself to both traditional and contemporary styles, Duality leans into contrasts and is a means of self-expression through bold and bright shades, clean pastels, and strong neutrals.

EPA Approves First UV/EB ASTM Test Method
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the use of ASTM D-7767-11 (Standard Test Method to Measure Volatiles from Radiation Curable Acrylate Monomers, Oligomers, and Blends and Thin Coatings Made from Them), the test method developed by RadTech members for UV/EB thin films. The action was part of the approval of the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (SCAQMD) graphic arts rule (Rule 1130) and marks the first time the EPA has approved a rule that includes a test method specifically for UV/EB thin films. At the regulators’ behest, RadTech members embarked in an effort to develop the test method, which involved 25 member companies, to get ASTM approval, which ultimately yielded ASTM D-7767 in 2011.
The EPA approved of the rule as part of the state implementation plan approval process. Its decision validates the ASTM method and offers additional certainty to raw material suppliers, formulators, and end users who may wish to employ the method to determine VOC content in UV/EB thin film operations.

ACA Seeks Nominations for Two Awards
The American Coatings Association (ACA) is seeking nominations for the inaugural David F. Darling Prize and the 2023 Joseph J. Mattiello Lecture Award.
The David F. Darling Prize will recognize individuals who, through coatings science, technology, and research, demonstrate innovation in the areas of sustainability and environmental stewardship. David F. Darling, who was ACA’s vice president of health, safety, and environmental affairs, passed away on January 30, 2022. A staunch and effective advocate for ACA and the industry for 25 years, his expertise and contributions to the coatings industry extended into the sustainability sphere and the related area of product stewardship, where he developed a wide network of professionals with the goal of creating scientifically informed solutions for the coatings industry.
The Prize recipient will be announced during the ACA’s CoatingsTech Conference, which will be held June 26-28, 2023, in Cleveland, Ohio. The winner will be presented with a plaque and accompanying $5,000 monetary prize. More information is available at https://www.paint.org/dfd-prize/.
The Joseph J. Mattiello Lecure Award recipient will deliver a technical presentation at the CoatingsTech Conference on a phase of chemistry, engineering, human relationship, or other discipline fundamental to paint, coatings, varnish, lacquer, or related protective and decorative coatings. All nominations should be submitted by December 1, 2022, to ACA’s director, product stewardship, science and technology, Dr. Scott Braithwaite at sbraithwaite@paint.org.

FGIA Updates Suite of Aluminum Finishes Documents
The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) has released three updated documents describing test procedures and performance requirements for organic coatings applied to aluminum extrusions and panels for architectural products. All three are now available for purchase.
- AAMA 2603-22: Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Pigmented Organic Coatings on Aluminum Extrusions and Panels (with Coil Coating Appendix).
- AAMA 2604-22: Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for High Performance Organic Coatings on Aluminum Extrusions and Panels (with Coil Coating Appendix).
- AAMA 2605-22: Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Superior Performance Organic Coatings on Aluminum Extrusions and Panels (with Coil Coating Appendix).
"The updated 2022 version of AAMA 2603, 2604, and 2605 have significantly defined the new technologies of pretreatment on aluminum in section 7.2.2 according to the chemical supplier's recommendation," said Carl Troiano, chair of the FGIA AMC finishes committee. "Some of the other significant changes are section 8.9 on weathering and section 8.4 for peel adhesion. These documents are the guidelines for aluminum finishes on organic coatings on aluminum, and will help guide architects and specifiers in their choice of choosing the correct type of performance for their specific projects."

Dutch Boy® Paints Releases Its 2023 Color of the Year and Three New Color Palettes
As home and workspace aesthetics continue to embrace feelings of safety, harmony, and comfort, relaxing and restorative paint colors – united with simple do-it-yourself (DIY) solutions – are in demand now more than ever. With consumers craving soothing simplicity and serenity in their most-loved spaces, Dutch Boy® Paints unveils its 2023 Color of the Year: Rustic Greige, a neutral that adds a touch of sophistication to any room and can be applied with just a single coat.
The medium-toned neutral color with a slight red undertone balances this sense of coziness and safety with a look that’s both worldly and charming. Revealing the illusion of being slightly washed, Rustic Greige is incredibly versatile, complementing both warm and cool color tones, as well as existing wood furniture and fixtures in both interior and exterior spaces.
Rustic Greige serves as the grounding color for three color palettes in the 2023 color trend forecast. By building on and playing off the neutral, natural tones of Rustic Greige, these corresponding hues deliver a layered look that’s comforting and sophisticated, while also embracing DIYers’ own unique design styles:
- Plush Palette: The Plush Palette elevates a room with a newfound sense of luxury that promotes mental, emotional, and spiritual health with soft, minimal shades, including Ultra White, Silvered Purple, and Ebony Sky.
- Wistful Palette: This color combination finds inspiration in the vintage and nostalgic. - Botanic Palette: True to its name, the Botanic collection is rooted in heritage inspired by shades both warm and sun-kissed, romantic and floral. Tapping into our need to bring color from the outside in, Rustic Greige is the foundational neutral that ties Amber Wood, Industrialized, and Limestone Slate together in expressions that are soulful, joyful, and creative.
“Dutch Boy’s 2023 color trend forecast is strongly rooted in the new ways we are experiencing life, nature, and one another,” said Michelle Bangs, senior brand manager, Dutch BoyPaints.
