Enhance your formulations with Capa technology

Ingevity has the expertise necessary to help customers create premium coating formulations for the most demanding indoor and outdoor applications. From aerospace to automotive OEM and refinish, coatings formulated with Capa are longer-lasting and built to perform.

Our Capa polyols have excellent compatibility with various coating binder systems, such as acrylic binders, and have unique properties that enable coatings to perform and last in harsh environments on various substrates, including plastic, wood and metal pre-finish applications. Additionally, the unique crosslinking and flexibility of Capa vastly improves abrasion and wear resistance, ultimately enhancing the overall performance and sustainability of your coating.

Low viscosity polyols for easier application and reduced VOCs

Polyurethane Coatings: Ingevity’s liquid grade polyols, which are lower molecular weight products with a narrow molecular weight distribution, are typically lower viscosity to that of an acrylic binder and alternative polyester adipate polyols. Low viscosity polyols allows a formulator to displace solvent use while still maintaining viscosity needed for application. They can also be used to reduce the viscosity of your coating system while providing additional benefits such as improved chemical resistance, high abrasion resistance and scratch resistance. Capa polyols are available with two, three, or four hydroxyl groups. Capa polyols are effective at levels as low as 5% on solids to enhance the performance of 2K solventborne coatings. Moreover, Capa polyols are fully aliphatic, resulting in outstanding clarity and weathering resistance.

A high-performance building block for specialty coatings applications

Polyurethane dispersion intermediates: Capa polyols are also used as intermediates in the production of polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) and offer benefits such as low synthesis viscosity, enhanced performance and increased pre-polymer stability.

Capa diols are typically used to help formulate PUDs, which produce coatings with exceptional elongation properties, soft feel and chemical resistance. Whatever target substrate application you’re trying to achieve, Capa diols and triols will provide value and improved performance to your PUD formulation.

UV cure intermediates

For more than 40 years, we have supplied the UV coatings industry with a range of high-quality polyols for use as intermediates in the production of binders for the UV coatings industry. Intermediates produced with Capa technology offer superior performance advantages such as increased toughness and flexibility. Our range of polyols can also be used as reactive diluents and additives to improve crosslinking capabilities and flexibility of your UV formulation.

Improved abrasion resistance

Capa polyols provide abrasion resistance properties to PUDs compared to alternate technologies, such polycarbonate diols. The following graph shows three PUD-based coatings, manufactured with alternative PUD technologies. Capa polycaprolactone-based coatings show significant improvements to abrasion resistance, emphasizing that hard-wearing, high-performance coatings can be formulated using PUDs synthesized to incorporate Capa grades.

Excellent exterior durability

Caprolactone-based PUD formulations will exhibit less gloss reduction over time when exposed to UV light compared to alternative technologies, such as polyether.

From coating wind turbines to protecting electronic equipment, Ingevity can help you reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and achieve coating formulations that offer unmatched durability.

Our Capa technology can enable new capabilities for your existing coating formulations, saving you valuable development time. Utilize Capa products as a performance enhancer, to reduce VOCs and make high-solid coatings.
